How to Design a Jacket: Outerwear Construction Guide

How to design a jacket — covering outerwear construction, fabric selection, closure systems, lining, and creating production-ready specifications.

Jacket categories and complexity

Jackets are among the most complex garments to design and produce. The construction requirements vary significantly by type:

Jacket complexity levels

TypeComplexityKey considerations
Coach jacketLowSnap closure, unlined, simple construction
Bomber jacketMediumRib collar/cuffs, zipper, lining
Denim truckerMedium-HighButton closure, yoke construction, specific wash
Puffer jacketHighBaffling, fill material, seam sealing
Varsity jacketHighWool body, leather sleeves, rib trim
Waterproof shellVery HighSeam taping, waterproof zippers, DWR coating

Fabric and insulation

Jacket fabric selection depends on function and style. Shell fabrics range from cotton canvas and denim to technical nylon and polyester. Consider weight, water resistance, breathability, and durability.

If your jacket includes insulation, specify the type (synthetic fill, down, quilted lining) and the weight in grams per square meter. The insulation method — quilted channels, baffled construction, or bonded — affects both warmth and visual design.

Closure and hardware

Jacket closures are a major design element:

  • Zippers: Specify brand (YKK is standard), type (coil, vislon, metal), size, and slider style
  • Buttons: Material, size, shank vs sew-through, and placement spacing
  • Snaps: Size, material (metal, plastic), finish, and spring type
  • Storm flaps: Specify if the closure has a wind-blocking flap and its construction
  • Drawcords: Waist and hem adjustment cords with specific hardware

Creating a jacket tech pack

Jacket tech packs are more complex than basic garments. Include detailed flat sketches of interior construction (lining, pockets, facing), hardware specifications with supplier references, and insulation construction details if applicable.

Specify pocket types carefully — welt pockets, patch pockets, chest pockets, and interior pockets each have different construction requirements. Include pocket bag dimensions and closure mechanisms.
