How to Design Lingerie: Fabrics, Fit, and Engineering
How to design lingerie — covering specialized fabrics, fit engineering, construction techniques, and creating production-ready specifications.
Lingerie design is engineering
Lingerie design is more engineering than fashion. Every millimeter of construction affects comfort, support, and fit. The margin for error is smaller than any other garment category because the garments are worn against skin in high-movement areas.
Start by understanding the functional requirements of each piece type. A bralette, a structured bra, a brief, and a slip all have fundamentally different construction principles.
Specialized fabrics
Lingerie uses fabrics not found in other garment categories:
- Stretch lace: Nylon/spandex lace with 4-way stretch for comfort and shape
- Power mesh: Lightweight, sheer, supportive mesh for inner construction
- Microfiber: Ultra-soft nylon/spandex for smooth silhouettes
- Tricot: Smooth, lightweight knit for linings and slips
- Foam padding: Various densities for molded cups (spacer fabric is modern alternative)
- Elastics: Picot edge, plush-back, tunnel, and fold-over elastics for edges and straps
Fit and sizing complexity
Lingerie sizing is the most complex in fashion. Bras require both band size and cup size, creating a matrix of sizes. Each size combination has different pattern dimensions.
Fit testing is critical and should be done on actual bodies in the target size range. A bra that fits a size 34B perfectly may have structural issues at 36DD that cannot be predicted from grading alone.
Construction techniques
Lingerie construction uses specialized techniques:
- Elastic application: Direct stitch, encased, or fold-over methods for edges
- Channeling: Fabric channels for boning in structured pieces
- Cup construction: Seamed, molded, or cut-and-sew cups
- Strap attachment: Rings and sliders for adjustable straps
- Hook and eye closures: Standard 2x3 or 3x3 hook-and-eye for bra bands
- Ultrasonic bonding: Seamless edge finishing for smooth silhouettes
